Dakar Located on the Cap Vert peninsula and Africa’s westernmost city, Dakar is a thriving, colourful, lively city that provides the first real experience of urban West Africa on this trip. Brash and often uncompromising, it was once of the major cities of the French Empire and today is home to over a million people. With busy traffic and street vendors everywhere, Dakar is a world away from the rest of Senegal. Nearby is Goree Island, in contrast a peaceful sanctuary with well preserved colonial buildings giving it an almost Mediterranean feel. Goree is best known for its associations with the slave trade, although there is some controversy about how much of a role it actually played.

4 Day Tour : ST. LOUIS – DJOUDJ PARK – ST. LOUIS (110 KM).
HOTEL CAP SAINT-LOUIS 3*.
- One of the most important bird sanctuaries in the world; Djoudj National Park, regarded as one of the most important bird reserves in the world. This national park provides the first major water source for migratory birds after their long and gruelling flight over the Sahara desert. We travel by motorised boat along the complex network of channels which lead off the Senegal River. The bird count reaches millions, some species are prevalent such as pelicans – there are as many as 15,000 in the park. We may see them performing an amazing display of synchronised diving for fish and will see a breeding colony. Around three million birds pass through the park annually which includes 400 different species – including herons, white-breasted cormorants, spoonbills, jacanas, Egyptian geese, West African fish eagles and flamingos to name but a few. You may also see crocodile, wild hog, monitor lizard and water python. We return back to St. Louis early afternoon in time for a break

6 Day Tour : DAY FOR DISCOVERY OF THE SALOUM DELTA

- This morning we cross the Sine-Saloum Delta by traditional pirogues (motorised canoe) for approximately 4-5 hours. We weave our way through the maze of wide channels, past mangroves, open forests, sand islands and villages built on islands constructed with oyster shells. We may also chance upon pelicans and flamingos.



- Explore the river delta by traditional pirogue through mangroves and aquatic birds.

- Leaving Saloum Delta National Park this morning, we finally make our way back to Dakar. En-route we visit Fadiout, a fishing village. Built on a small island, many buildings are composed of oyster and clam shells, whilst the inhabitants are both Muslim and Christian and live together peacefully. The Christian and Muslim cemeteries are built on a huge ancient shell mound, and are worth a visit.

- STOP AT JOAL-FADIOUTH, FORMER PORTUGUESE COUNTER AND HOMETOWN OF THE POET LÉOPOLD SÉDAR SENGHOR, FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SENEGAL. THE SMALL TOWN IS ACTUALLY TWO VILLAGES, JOAL – THE LARGEST – ESTABLISHED ON THE COAST, AND FADIOUTH, AN ARTIFICIAL ISLAND CONSISTING OF PILES OF SHELLS AND CONNECTED TO THE COAST BY A WOODEN BRIDGE.
- VISIT OF THE SHELL CEMETERY AND WALK ACROSS THE BRIDGE TO THE CHURCH OF FADIOUTH.
- THEN, VISIT THE LOCAL MARKET OF M’BOUR WITH ITS PEANUT STALLS AND PALM OIL THEN, VISIT THE SOMON LAGOON.

8 Day Tour : DAKAR – GORÉE ISLAND .
FLIGHT BACK DAKAR – MILAN


- Visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site We begin our tour by taking a ferry to Isle de Goree, a small and peaceful island without any traffic. We will take a walking tour of Isle de Goree, a busy trading centre during the 18th and 19th centuries, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town’s architecture may make you feel you have been transported in time to an old-world Mediterranean district, due to the island’s charming colonial-style houses, wrought-iron balconies, narrow streets and brightly coloured bougainvillea. Le Castel is situated on a rocky plateau with its fortifications dating back to different periods, and offers good views across to Dakar. Also worth visiting is the Slave House originally built in 1786.

- DISCOVERY OF SENEGALESE CAPITAL, HECTIC AND NOISY CITY. VISIT THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE WITH ITS RED GUARDS.
- THE CITY CENTER, THE MARKET, THE CORNICE AND THE CATHEDRAL.
THEN BOAT TRIP TO GOREE ISLAND, WHICH WAS THE 15TH TO 19TH CENTURY THE LARGEST SLAVE TRADE CENTER ON THE AFRICAN COAST. - LUNCH THEN VISIT THE HOUSE OF SLAVES, THE ESTRÉES FORT HOUSING THE HISTORICAL MUSEUM, THE SAINT-CHARLES CHURCH OF BOROMÉE,

Airport transfers – We include arrival and departure transfers regardless of whether you book flights yourself, or we book them for you. If you’re booking them yourself, then please let us know the details so that we can arrange the transfers.
Please note though that if you arrive earlier than Day 1 of the tour, and leave after the final day, we may need to make an additional charge for an airport transfer.
Accommodation – Accommodation as listed in the dossier. The nature of the destinations that we operate may sometimes mean that we need to change hotels, but we’ll always endeavour to keep the same standards. Please be aware that as we operate in many countries where tourism is in its infancy, hotel standards may not be the same as you’re used to elsewhere.
Guides – In most cases you will be accompanied by one guide from start to finish. However there may be occasions when this is not practical, for example if your trip covers a number of different countries. In these cases it often makes more sense to include different guides for each place, to take advantage of their specific knowledge of the destination.
